I watched a Bullshit episode about taxes which was originally shown on Showtime a few weeks ago. I often agree with Penn and Teller but expected that I would disagree with their usual libertarian view during this Bullshit episode. Even that expected disagreement did not prepare me for the Bullshit skit which they performed to demonstrate the progressive tax system.
Teller had a piece of pie and Penn did not, so Penn took Teller's entire piece and ate it, leaving Teller with none. This process was repeated two times.
Even under the most heavily progressive tax rates of the mid 20th century, the richest people were still the richest people. There was just a smaller gap between the upper and lower classes.
Here's the best comment that I saw about it:
So that's why all the poor people are super rich, and the rich are super poor. The analogy fits reality perfectly, because that's what it is like to be poor. You get everything the rich people have, and the rich get nothing. Think about it! That's why rich people live on the streets and have no clothes or food, and the poor live in great big mansions and eat rich people food all day while doing nothing. Damn poor people. Oh wait, it's the other way around.
